Old Money

"Understated wealth. No visible logos."

Timeless (mainstreamed 2022 – present)

Old Money aesthetic draws from the visual language of inherited wealth — not flashy new-money displays, but the quiet confidence of families who've been rich long enough that they don't need to prove it. Cashmere, equestrian heritage, prep school, and the total absence of branding.

The Preppy Origins

Old Money aesthetic descends from American and British prep culture — Ivy League universities, New England sailing, and the country club. The visual codes were documented in Lisa Birnbach's The Official Preppy Handbook (1980): Lacoste polo shirts, topsiders, crewneck sweaters tied at the shoulder. The 2020s version is quieter — less Vineyard Vines, more Loro Piana.

The 'Succession' Effect

The HBO series Succession (2018–2023) became an unlikely fashion document. Costume designer Michelle Matland dressed the Roy family in deliberately anti-fashion wealth signals — plain cashmere, muted colors, clothes that fit perfectly and cost obscenely without announcing it. Viewers noted and copied the look, cementing Old Money as the aesthetic of the early 2020s.
