Vaporwave

"Glitching through an 80s mall at 3am."

2010 – present

Vaporwave is a retrofuturist aesthetic born from internet micro-genres: glitched Roman busts, neon grids, pastel sunsets, and the uncanny feeling of a deserted shopping mall. It satirizes and celebrates late-capitalism simultaneously.

Vaporwave's Visual Language

The Vaporwave aesthetic built a visual vocabulary from three main sources: classical Greco-Roman sculpture (often glitched or duplicated), early Windows and Mac UI (aqua gradients, early 3D renders), and Japanese urban photography from the 1980s bubble economy. The result feels like someone tried to reconstruct capitalism from memory.

The Irony Engine

Vaporwave's genius is its ambivalent relationship with what it parodies. Its slowed muzak both mocks and mourns corporate entertainment. Its imagery both critiques and celebrates the mall-era consumer dream. This ambiguity is why it resonated so deeply — it named the feeling of being immersed in a cultural system you didn't choose but can't escape.
