Grunge

"Flannel, distortion, and the beauty of not trying."

1987 – 1994 (perennial revival)

Grunge emerged from Seattle's underground music scene as a sonic and visual rejection of 80s excess. Flannel over band tees, ripped denim, unwashed hair, and Doc Martens became the uniform of a generation that found mainstream aspiration exhausting.

Grunge's Accidental Fashion Influence

Grunge's relationship with fashion is famously paradoxical. Kurt Cobain wore cardigan sweaters from Salvation Army; Calvin Klein immediately put them on the runway. Marc Jacobs' 1993 Grunge collection for Perry Ellis got him fired — and became one of the most influential collections in American fashion history. The aesthetic that most despised fashion became one of its most referenced.

The Courtney Love Paradox

Courtney Love's 'kinderwhore' aesthetic — baby doll dresses, smeared lipstick, ripped tights, and deliberate girlishness weaponized as aggression — added a feminist subtext to grunge dressing. It took 'pretty' signifiers and pushed them past comfort, creating an aesthetic that was simultaneously vulnerable and threatening. Versace eventually invited her to the Met Gala.
