Indie Sleaze

"Flash photography, cheap drinks, and the best night of your life."

2004 – 2012 (revival 2021 – present)

Indie Sleaze captures the flash-photography, American Apparel, Brooklyn loft-party aesthetic of the mid-2000s. Messy hair, leather jackets, band tees, and the particular coolness of looking like you stumbled out of the best party in a city that no longer exists.

The Cobrasnake Era

Mark Hunter's photography blog 'The Cobrasnake' (2004–2012) is the primary document of Indie Sleaze culture. His flash-photography portraits from parties in Los Angeles and New York created the visual language of the aesthetic: blown-out skin, artfully messy hair, and an atmosphere of being somewhere important. The images look both aspirational and attainable, which is Indie Sleaze's central trick.

American Apparel as Aesthetic Infrastructure

Dov Charney's American Apparel (2003–2016) provided the wardrobe infrastructure for Indie Sleaze. Its basics — the scoop-neck bodysuit, the flex fleece hoodie, the interlock mini skirt — were technically simple clothes that became aesthetic signifiers when styled correctly. The brand's controversial image somehow added to its subcultural cachet.
